Lou Ferrigno - Then

Retired professional bodybuilder and actor Lou Ferrigno had humble beginnings. Before he came into the spotlight, he was actually a metal sheet worker. Back then, he only earned $10 an hour.

Of course, with perseverance and a lot of dedication to his passion in bodybuilding, Ferrigno eventually found his way into the spotlight even though it took him a few years before he got any attention. We all know him as the guy who starred in a renowned documentary titled, Pumping Iron.

And even with this alone, Ferrigno already garnered a lot of fans and respect from his peers. As a former bodybuilder, he also has several titles to boast of, including the IFBB Mr. America title. This Brooklyn native certainly enjoyed the many joys of fame of fortune in his career.

Lou Ferrigno - Now

Because he was already such a hunky muscly guy, Lou Ferrigno thought that perhaps he could dip his toes in a different industry — sports. And thus, he came to a decision to start a football career with the Toronto Argonauts. 

But things did not work well in his favor in this career change, and he decided to hang up his laces to pursue something else. And what could that be? Acting, of course! And boy, did he succeed.

He honed his acting skills and was part of shows such as the King of Queens and his acting as the protagonist in The Incredible Hulk was much appreciated. Anyone who has seen the iconic 1970s musical rom-com movie Grease certainly knows who John Travolta is. His role as Danny Zuko put him in the spotlight and we can't deny that we certainly had the hots for the young Travolta.

He was definitely eye candy, and his charming good looks got him not only a loyal fanbase but also a slew of other movie projects that furthered his career in Hollywood. He went on to star in many romantic comedies such as the Perfect. And that, as well as many other movie roles, probably added more money in his bank account than he could imagine.

In Perfect, his and Jamie lee Curtis's aerobic workout routine became a source of secondhand embarrassment for viewers around the world. Albeit infamous, this scene continues to remain a resource for innumerable memes. John was predominantly known for his dancing skills, which he displayed in many a film, including Saturday Night Fever. These films were incredibly popular and catapulted Travolta into the big league.

While he was known for his cringe-y fitness boo-boo scene earlier in his career, he isn't too much into fitness now but he prefers sinking his teeth into a myriad of roles including, Pulp Fiction, Hairspray, Swordfish, Ladder 49, Be Cool, Lonely Hearts, and Wild Hogs.

Bolt and it just goes to show that he's quite the talented actor. Many of his films earned him awards, accolades, and of course, Academy Award nominations.

He has also been hosting various award shows now and recently hinted on his Instagram account that he will be putting his career on hold as he wanted to be there for his children, after losing his wife to cancer.

Raquel Welch - Then

Nancy Kerrigan - Then

Olympian Nancy Kerrigan was the crowd favorite at the 1994 U.S. Nationals. She went head to head against Baiul, another prominent figure skater. In the end, Baiul emerged victorious.

But this didn't deter her from trying and being better in the sport that she truly loves. In fact, she was so excellent that she received the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. However, the ice princess experienced a great deal of hardship.

In 1994, on the eve of her U.S. figure skating competition, Kerrigan was attacked with a metal baton to her leg. Luckily, she recovered from the injury and was able to compete in the U.S. Nationals. That just goes to show what a strong-willed woman she is!

Nancy Kerrigan - Now

After her Olympic competition, Nancy retired from her figure skating career. She continued skating for professional shows and started working as a T.V. commentator for figure skating events. Despite her retirement, she could never completely leave the sport behind.

She was the first female athlete to be featured in the Sports Illustrated magazine as a "Sportswoman of the Year” in 1976. She won first place in the British Columbian Championships, catching the attention of the then Flex editor-in-chief Jerry Kindela, who even went on to call her one of the most beautiful bodybuilders he had ever seen.

With her rippling, muscles, bright smile, and impeccable confidence, she was indeed one of the most popular female bodybuilders ever. Komlos went on to be featured in many fitness magazines including Muscle & Fitness, Flex, Women's Physique World, and Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness.

Although, Komlos went on to experience great success in her earlier life, she unfortunately died way too soon at the age of only 35. But she did make out the most out of her short-lived existence.

She went on to walk down the aisle with Paul Lazenby, an MMA fighter. Komlos took a break from WWF wrestling, but because of her love for sports, she returned to wrestling just a year later. She also was part of the independent circuit in Winnipeg, Canada for promoting No Holds Barred wrestling.

In her entire career, she only wrestled in two matches on December 1, 2000, as she went on to lose to the Mean Mad Midget and defeated Chi Chi Cruz. Who would dare to forget the energetic celebrity fitness guru Richard Simmons?Richard was a game-changer fitness guru who made fitness a fun and effective activity. Even those who had a hard time starting in their fitness journey only had to watch Simmons. He was that good!

We have seen him from different shows and other media platforms. We are sure it's hard to forget the way he led you into the groove of heart-pumping and calorie-burning exercise classes.

What really made him famous as a fitness instructor was a series of videos titled Sweatin' to the Oldies. Because of the fame he achieved, he was often invited in shows like Late Show With David Letter and The Howard Stern Show.

Richard Simmons - Now

He certainly accomplished a lot from his multiple TV screen appearance and from his own investment with Slimmons gym. The said gym was earlier The Anatomy Asylum and became a fitness empire for decades.

You couldn’t miss his trademark fitness attire of dolphin shorts and tank tops bedazzled with Swarovski crystals. He truly does know how to get people's attention, and people love him for his flamboyance.

Today, he still likes to stay fit and fine and continues practicing his routines. But did you know that he's also into activism? He eventually stepped away from the spotlight in 2014, but he continues to upload videos of his old fitness videos to help viewers stay fit and fine!

Jamie Lee Curtis - Then

Jamie Lee Curtis wasn't exactly a fitness guru in the 80s but she did have one scene that made us believe that she could be one. She went onto star opposite John Travolta in the '85 film Perfect based on the LA health club's hype. There was an infamous workout scene that lasted twenty minutes and went down to become one of the most cringe-worthy scenes ever.

The former law student dropped out after the first semester when the acting bug hit her. Before her meme-worthy scene in Perfect, she first starred in the film, John Carpenter's Halloween. 

The film went onto become a major success and then went onto the highest-grossing independent film of its time, achieving the status of the classic horror film. And that catapulted her career to greater heights. After her acting talent shone in Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis started receiving one movie role after another.

But that fitness venture was short-lived because she decided to focus more of her time honing her acting skills and also working on one project after another - and we can't blame her really because she tasted success as an actress!

Besides her breakthrough role in Melrose Place, she was also on numerous other movies and television shows including The Perfect Man, Spin City, and Dynasty to name a few.

At the same time, Fonda also continued pursuing her acting career. Some of her movie credits include On Golden Pond, Walk on the Wild Side, and Coming Home. But even with a slew of movies and a fitness career under her belt, Fonda still wanted to do more.

Today, she is a humanitarian doing tons of charity work and famous for her political activities and views on women's issues. Jane Fonda will be famous forever for her outspokenness. Kathy Smith is a personal trainer who shot to fame with her workout videos during the late 1980s and 1990s. She has been able to sell off about 16 million workout videos since 1980 which is an incredible achievement.

She created a Project: You! Type 2 which she made with the American Diabetes Association, a lifestyle protocol to manage Type 2 diabetes. Smith was one of the few women who went onto win the Honolulu marathon in 1975, and the Runner's World magazine also named her one of the top 100 marathon runners in the country.

Apart from being a multi-millionaire in her mid-thirties, her induction into the Video Hall of Fame was one of her major achievements. It just goes to show that she truly is passionate in fitness and makes sure that everyone else puts as much importance to their health through her work.

Kathy Smith - Now

Because of her contributions in the industry, she earned the title of being "the titan of the workout industry," and her net worth is around $500 million! It is largely because of her numerous fitness things, such as books, fitness apparel, equipment, and videos.

One of her books, Moving Through Menopause, made her a spokesperson for the International Council on Active Agings. Kathy launched an app ReShape that includes, meal plans, daily workouts, and meditations for staying healthy and fit which caters to people of all ages.

Ever heard of the term, "Jazzercise"? Well, fitness star Judi Sheppard Missett is the pioneer behind this workout style and actually even founded a company of the same name in 1969.

If you didn't know, Jazzercise is a type of full-body workout that incorporates dancing and strength and resistance training, and all this with high-energy popular music blaring loudly in the background to keep you pumped up and motivated.

The idea came to her back when she was still teaching dance lessons for women. She wanted her students to not only learn how to dance but also have fun and focus on their fitness at the same time. She decided to change her usual dance lessons and came up with Jazzercise which then being a big hit.

Judi Sheppard Missett - Now

Even in her senior years, there is no sign of stopping Judi Sheppard Missett – the jazzercise guru. The fitness coach, who is not in her 70s, focuses her life on “growing, rather than aging”. And this philosophy works! Judi looks and feels like in her 30s.

She lives a healthy and active lifestyle and maintains the spark of youth in her. How does she stay flawless and ageless? Judi claims that doing your life’s passion is the most effective youth potion she has ever had. Following your passion brings joy and gets you going every day.

Following her successful roles in series such as Melrose Place and Charmed, she became a part of the show, Mistresses. In 2013, however, she opted out of the show because of a family emergency.

Recently, she has been part of shows for the streaming giant, Netflix, such as Insatiable and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. She is now married  David Bugliari and shares two children with him.

She has left behind her workout tape days, settling into happy domesticity with her family at Bell Canyon USA. She is also an activist now, lending her voice for many humanitarian and progressive causes close to her heart.

Linnea Quigley - Then

Dubbed as the ‘70s “Scream Queen", Linnea Quigley, was famous for starring in a lot of slasher B-movie horror films back in her day. Some of her early works, including The Return of the Living Dead and Night of the Demons, made her one of the most famous women of B-movie horror films.

Aside from acting, Linnea was also part of an all-female band called The Skirts. She also wrote books about her career and experience as a B-movie actress – The Linnea Quigley Bio & Chainsaw Handbook and I’m Screaming as Fast as I Can: My Life in B-Movies.

Because of her reputation in the horror genre, Linnea decided to have a bit of fun and released a workout video. But it's not like any other workout video - she actually incorporated horror elements in the workout which sounds funny but it was a hit, and for a short period of time, Linnea Quigley was a fitness guru slash Scream Queen.

Of course, age didn't stop Linnea Quigley from acting in horror movies. How could she stop when horror is something she is interested in and passionate about? And of course, she wanted to maintain her "Scream Queen" status throughout the years.

In fact, she continued to work on movie projects even in the 2010s. Some of her latest movie credits include Stripperland (2010), 1313: Cougar Cult (2012), and 3 Scream Queens (2014).

Even in her 60s, she still has her shiny, blonde locks and well-maintained physique. Whether it’s a sip from the fountain of youth or basic switch to a healthy lifestyle, Linnea seemed to defy time and reversed aging. There is no stopping Linnea Quigley in living an active and fulfilled life.

The media hails her as the Goddess of Pop, and they have every reason to do so. Cher garnered widespread popularity with I Got You Babe, which grabbed the No.1 spot on the British and American charts.

Within two years, Cher earned the distinction of selling over 40 million records across the globe and became one of the most sought-after stars in the industry. Her other singles such as Half-Breed, Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves, and Dark Lady were equally popular. Cher's earnings throughout the career have always kept her safe from any financial headaches.

Jake Steinfeld - Then

In the world of fitness, especially. back in the '80s, a lot of women ruled and dominated this field. Jake Steinfeld was one of the few men who began his career in this field all the way back in 1979.

The Brooklynite grew his wealth through his various fitness training businesses. He started his spin-off through Body by Jake® on fitness television platform. But of course, in his early days, Jake actually worked closely with Hollywood actors.

One interesting fact about him is that back in his hey days, he was actually the personal trainer of big names in Hollywood like the iconic Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg whom he worked with during the filming of two Indiana Jones movies. That was proof enough that Jake was a fitness expert.

Jake Steinfeld - Now

No gym, no problem with the reigning fitness icon Jake Steinfield. The fit and fine hunk, who is now in his 60s, has been actively encouraging the public to get fit and remain sane amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

He also launched an online digital platform, FitOrbit. On this platform, he lets his personal trainers have a live interaction with clients online. Steinfield continues to set himself as an epitome of a fit and healthy lifestyle while also doing his service as the Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils.

He keeps telling people that fitness need not be fancy. In times like this, he helps people to stay in shape using their household items such as broomsticks, chairs, canned goods or water bottles to get their body moving. Great tips!

Paula Abdul - Then

Paula's career as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers began at the age of 18 and she got a promotion to be the head choreographer of Laker Girls. Later, Abdul caught the eye of the Jackson family.

She became a household name after choreographing the foot-tapping music videos for Janet Jackson. And because of her expertise in the world of dancing, Abdul was signed on as a choreographer by Virgin Records.

Her debut studio album Forever Your Girl rose to the top of the charts and became one of the most successful debut albums at that time, selling 7 million copies in the United States. She also produced the album, Paula Abdul's Get Up and Dance.

The Grease star is now in her 70s, yet she looks radiant and beautiful as always. She is a successful singer, actress, dancer, activist, and entrepreneur. Olivia has a huge fan base and has sold numerous records across the world.

Gilad Janklowicz - Then

The Israeli fitness instructor shot to tremendous fame with the 1983 aerobic workout tape Bodies in Motion. He came to be known as one of the first instructors to get a program aired on ESPN.

Prior to this, the channel has never had a personal training segment before this even when their focus was primarily on sports. The show was very successful and enjoyed a decade-long success.

Janklowicz was also inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame. He also released three new fitness DVDs from his Total Body Sculpt Series, FiTV. In January 2008 Gilad went on to release the Express Workouts.

Though the show, Bodies in Motion no longer air on ESPN, Janklowicz isn't ready to retire as yet. The show next went on be air on Discovery Health Channel picked and Gilad went on to make aerobics videos for over the next thirty years.

He now currently resides on the shores of Hawaii and is still into active sports, indulging in surfing and exercising, and he continues to make new videos. He has trained many celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack La Lanne, and quarterback Joe Theismann.

Gilad also appeared in the Bodies in Motion television program. He is still an avid fitness enthusiast helping people get into the best shape of their lives. Great going, Gilad!

Billy Blanks - Then

Billy Blanks began studying martial arts at the age of eleven and began taking Karate and Taekwondo classes. He was born with a problem in his hip joints that restricted his movement.

Blanks was subjected to taunts and jibes because of his physical impairment and began impacting his confidence levels even making him believe that he would never accomplish much. However, Blanks' brush with martial arts completely changed his life challenges in karate. He was inspired by the incredible Bruce Lee when he first saw him on TV and he knew he had to champion the art of martial arts.

Later, he invented Tae Bo, a martial arts practice that helped him incorporate boxing moves. He also went on to be a part of many martial arts films. His role in the film, Kiss the Girls was much appreciated.

Billy Blanks - Now

Apart from being part of the film and Tae Bo videos, Blanks currently teaches in classes. Though he was more popular in the 90s while he was still an actor, he's known for his show Billy's Bootcamp.

But his true passion lies in Tae Bo. This type of workout is a high-pressure workout routine that aims to change the metabolism of the person and help him get fitter and better.

Now, he resides in Orange County after years of teaching at a Gold’s Gym in Rancho Santa Margarita. He is now still into fitness, and he still teaches Tae Bo to several of his clients and makes it his business to make people fit.

Cathy Lee Crosby - Then

Cathy Lee Crosby, daughter to actress mother and screenwriter father, was born with an advantage in show business. While she eventually tried her luck in the industry when she grew older, tennis has always been her first love.

Cathy Lee was great at the sport that she even competed in Wimbledon. But after competing twice in Wimbledon, she gave up being a professional tennis player in 1967. She then focused her time on other matters.

From a fitness icon to a successful businessman, Tony Little, now in his 60s, has been famous to be an energetic personality in TV shows and various infomercials. And we can't deny that he has convinced us to give attention to our own fitness after seeing him in shows.

But while Tony Little is successful and enjoys fame and fortune, life hadn't always been easy for this fitness star. Before he stepped into his business success, Little encountered a car accident in 1983.

Little went through a long period of depression and faced a hard time in his physical recovery. And we can't even imagine the kind of pain he went through during that tough time in his life.

However, never say never for a fitness trainer like Tony Little. He managed to turn things around by viewing his miserable years, learning from them, and turning them into an opportunity.

Starting from scratch, he founded a cleaning company for fitness gyms and health clubs. After that, he received an offer to sell 400 exercise videos in a span of just four days.

Such a natural talent, Little sold it all in less than four hours. And the rest is history. Now, Little has built his own fitness empire. You will always hear his catchphrases, “You can do it!” and “Always believe in yourself”.

Debbie Dobbins - Then

Dobbins went on to make aerobics as her career after rounding off college, and she continued in this career for almost seven years.

She made her way to LA to make major inroads in her fitness career but she changed direction and started modeling for various fitness magazines instead. She also joined the NFL as a cheerleader.

Apart from that, she became part of many competitions and grabbed the third position in the 1993's Ms. Fitness USA competition. While cementing her place as a fitness model, she also worked full-time for a leasing company and dabbled in promotional work for Randy Pfund, coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Debbie Dobbins - Now

Dobbins's illustrious career as a fitness competitor and fitness model was tragically cut short as she was killed in a fire in 1993 at the height of her career by accidental smoke inhalation.

In 1994, an episode of the show Hard Copy hinted at foul play, and though there have been conjectures of the same from several quarters, nothing concrete or no evidence has surfaced on the same.

The fitness community still remembers the gracious beauty who had remarkable fitness prowess and was a raving beauty at that time. She breathed her last on December 30, 1993. May her soul rest in peace.
