Ultrasound Revelations
A lion fell sick in a national park and suddenly garnered much attention for how it gave birth. The man taking care of the lion called the vet, who in turn called the police. The police came to the site immediately to take a good look at what exactly was happening.
The lion needed help immediately, and it was impossible for the vet to resolve the issue alone. Also, the lion needed surgery and one look at her stomach would reveal that there was something happening in her stomach.
Police Begins Interrogations
Finally, when the police arrived at the scene they immediately set to work. The main issue that was troubling the people attending the lion was it was challenging to sedate the lifeless giant lion.
But the police did not only come to offer their help but they had a few questions to ask the ranger. Their sudden summoning of him surprised and shocked the ranger, as far as he was concerned, he has not committed any mistake. Although he was sure he was not at fault, he still went to answer the questions.
Pretty Surprising
George of course answered the questions as well as possible. He has been working as a ranger for years and has been a protector of the animals and the lion for many years. He was answering the questions but his ears were catching strains of the conversation going on in the surgery room.
There the vet was saying that the vet could not believe what she was seeing before her eyes. George started wondering exactly what the vet could have seen that made her react the way she did. Well, George would soon get an inkling about that.
Safe From Harm
George has been very observant about the lions in the area, and his experience as a ranger has helped him note all the details about the lions in the ranger.
He was entrusted with the task of taking care of the animals and ensuring that they come to no harm. They had to be on the lookout because lately there has been a number of poachers in the area and they have been creating a lot of ruckus in the sanctuary. The rangers had been on high alert as a result.
Slow And Difficult Process
George and the other rangers had been trying their level best to keep the animal safe. However, there has been trouble in the way, because they didn't have enough manpower.
The lack of proper manpower posed a great risk for the Savanna. The lack of manpower and the poachers wreaking havoc have led to many problems. The reserve required help and soon at that. The rangers were pretty worried about the current situation and wanted immediate help. The condition proved to be dangerous for the animals and their future in the ranger.
Everything Very Dangerous
The employer instead of doing something kept on putting pressure on the rangers, but the Rangers couldn't do anything about the situation, they were buckling under the immense pressure created by the employers.
Since the employer was putting pressure and the rangers were at a loss the poachers took ample opportunity of the situation. It created a big problem and there was no solution to the same unless higher authorities intervened. The rangers felt sorry for the animals but there was nothing that they could do. Maybe it was one of the reasons that the lion was affected.
Enormous in the Distance
George who was going on his usual routes noticed something and stopped. George strained his eyes further to see what was looming large before him. He was overworked and didn't know whether he was seeing right. But when he finally came closer, his jaw dropped when he saw the sight before his eyes.
He was wondering exactly what was happenning. Is he seeing things now? What could George have seen that made him seem so surprised? Well, we have to read on to find out. There had to be something very wrong and George would finally have to get to the bottom of the situation.
Something Very Wrong
What caught George's attention scared him at first and made him jump back to see exactly what was happenning. Yes, he saw the lion in all its full glory, which scared him at first.
Although he was a ranger, he had to be careful about the situation and approach the lion carefully. George observed the majestic animal from the distance and finally realized that the animal needed his immediate attention. George realized that there was something very wrong and the animal needed his immediate attention. The animal looked huge from a distance and is enough to scare anyone.
The Biggest Lion
George, thanks to his profession has seen many animals but none had been as huge as this one. The lion looked like a complete alpha male of the local lion pack.
But the lion despite his huge frame didn't seem very comfortable, in fact, his belly was swollen, so swollen that it looked weird. The animal was almost crying for help and George wondered how could he help him? He had no idea at first but he decided to find out for sure. Perhaps his fellow rangers will help him out.
Call For Help
George tentatively approached the lion at first. Of course, he was scared at first, but he suddenly remembered his duties as a ranger first and of course, his love for animals made him stop and help the poor animal at first.
Of course, he had to find out first why the lion's belly had swollen like that. He did not have any clue but he was sure some of the other rangers who had more experience surely had an answer to this predicament. Well, he had no clue but would find out soon.
Prompts Quick Action
George immediately asked his superiors about the problem at hand, even his superior agreed that action had to be taken to resolve the problem.
First they had to conduct tests to find out exactly what was causing swelling and then find out why the belly was swelling the way it was swelling. Even his superior was worried about the situation at hand and felt that George needed to act as fast as possible. The superior advised George to approach the lion with as much care as he could. George agreed with him, in order to save the lion's life, he needed to act fast.
Approaching the Lion
The other rangers quickly started arriving at the spot and George with resolve in his head and mustering enough courage in his heart, decided to approach the lion.
Lion's are proud and majestic animals, but they can act in a little erratic way. The majestic animal directed his steely gaze at George. For a moment George's hand went cold. Why was the lion looking at him? Was he trying to attack him? He knew at that moment he had to tread with care. His mind was working hard to find out how could he resolve the problem.
Another Solution
The other rangers who had come to spot as an answer to George's call and to assess the situation. They immediately sensed something was wrong and shouted at the top of their voice shouting, Get Back.
They warned him because the lion was in pain or discomfort and may try to defend himself and show aggression. The rangers were also thinking about it and find a suitable soution for the same. Did the rangers finally come up with a suitable solution? Well, read more to find out about what happened to the lion.
The Nearest Vet
The rangers then decided that the situatiopn needed a vet to resolve the situation. So they tried to call somebody who could call the animal veterinarian. The ranger immediately called the vet. The ranger and the vet had a long discussion.
As the conversation ended the ranger who had called her to discuss about the lion's situation were in complete shock, he simply couldn't believe his ears. His facial expressions also worried the other rangers present there. They began conversing in muffled tone trying to find a solution. The ranger who had taklked to the vet went to them to discuss the same.
Maintain a Safe Distance
The vet said that the the rangers have to get out of the area surrounding the lion otherwise there was high chances that he would attack the ranger or the rangers. He asked the other rangers to do something that would quieten the lion, there was another thing that they could try and that is sedation.
This would pacify the lion and help find out what could be affecting the lion. In fact it was the only way, there were no other safe ways to find out how to pacify the lion and find out what was affecting him?
Sedate The Lion
George next made sure that the rangers had secured the area so well so that the vet could finally get close to the lion. George had known all the lions of the well, and even this lion so they knew exactly how they could sedate the lion.
He had to ensure that everythuing would go on as smoothly as possible and there was no hiccups in the middle. George and the rangers along with the vet hatched a foolproof plan to help the lion. Whether they were successful, well only time will tell.
Successfully Sedated
Finally, the rangers could find whether they have been able to help the lion and was quickly sedated to find out what exactly was ailing the poor lion. It is so sad to spot a royal animal suffering so much.
The lion finally was sedated enough as it did not show any signs of resistance and did not show any inclination to attack the rangers. This was a good beginning and finally they would be able to find the real reason behind the lion's bloated tummy. Well, finally if they were able to find out they would be resolve the situation and save their beloved animal of the range.
Report the Strange Finding
The rangers could finally spot the bulge of the lion that was located on the body. George then called back the vet, to tell her what they had found out.
The rangers were also curious to find out what happened next, but as soon as the vets learned what could have possibly happened to the lion, her tone immediately changed. Was the lion seriously ill? Will the vet be succesful in diagnosing the problem and consequently treat the same? The rangers hoped for the best, but they needed the assurance from the vet.
The Bulge on a Specific Place
The bulge was trhere on a specific position in the body, right before the start of the stomach, it meant that something wanted to enter the lion's body but could not do so.
Although, they could find out that something was there in the lion, but they were still unable to find out exactly what could be inside the lion. The rangers racked their brains but could not come out with an answer, also they haven't seen anything like this ever before. This amazed the whole sanctuary and everyone had gathered to watch the spectacle.
The Next Step
The lion probably has swallowed something which he shouldn't have and needed immediate surgery if it had any hopes to survive or the rangers hope to save the lion.
There was very little time in their hands. But the rangers were still clueless. So their next bet was of course asking the vet and ask the vet, perhaps the vet would find an answer to this potent question. The only problem was the vet had to be there at the right time. Taking the lion to her wasn't a distinct possibility. The rangers hoped the vet would come to the range.
The Exact Location
But sadly, it was difficult for the vet to reach the ranger. The ranger's location was in a remote place, reaching there would turn out to be the biggest challenge.
Also, it was a rush hour, so there was distinct possibility of the vet getting stuck because of traffic snarls. But she had to be there fast, it was the only way to save the lion. Would the vet reach there in time? Well, we hope with the vet's and the rangers collective effort she would reach there in time.
A Visit to The Headquarters
Thankfully, there was one of the rangers who offered to pick the vet up. But it was also true that it would take too long to collect her.
There were other people in the ranger's headquarters who were aware of the rangers location and knew exactly how they could reach the location. So the vet in order to treat the lion had to be there in time at the headquarters. Would she be successful in reaching the headquarters in time? Well, if the rangers could find a way, she would definitely reach there in time.
Traversing the Savanna
After briefing the manager about the situation, he offered to help her and they thought about using his sturdy all-terrain jeep to drive through thr savanna, which was never the easiest thing in the world.
The vet knew it that it was going to be one bumpy ride and it turned out to be just that, the terrain was wild and not smooth at all, it was one of the longest jeep rides the vet had ever undertaken. By the end of the ride, the vet was visibly shaken but she was determined to reach there in time.
A Long Journey
The journey took the manager and the vet take 3 hours in total. Of course, the vet had thought about it countless times whether she was doing the right thing in pursuing the lion.
The lion was sounding like he was in critical stage, but then the vet thought, this was taking way too long, what about the other animals who were there in her clinic, who would take care of them, she failed to answe her own questions. But, it was probably the right thing to do on her own part.
Waiting For the Vet
At the site, the rangers were also waiting impatiently, she was taking a lot of time to reach at the site. Will the lion survive till then? They could not have waited for a long time since the lion's condition was in a pretty bad state.
They were right in whatever they were thinking. The lion's sedative were wearing out and he was moving a lot and wanted to move away from the current place. In fact it had to wait for a long time till they were hoping to move again. The rangers were not aware as to what to do next, should they wait for the vet or do as per her instructions.
No Consensus in The Group
Some rangers were getting weary of waiting, they wanted to go backl to home, they had been on the site far too long.
Most of them did not klnow exatly what was wrong with the lion, propbably it had eatern something and things would turn out all right if they just let it be. While there were some people who thought that they must stay on, there were others who thought that they should just go home. Clearly, there were no consensus in the group, they were clueless as to what to do as their next step.
The Last-Ditch Effort
There were other people who were moved by the vet's words to heart and knew that they had to be there for the lion, otherwise it would just die. Thankfully, thjis group proved to be in the majority and finally they agreed to stay on.
Hopefully, the vet would be there soon and together they would be able to rescue the lion. They continued to wait and finally they heard the sound of an appreoaching jeep or was it? They stopped their chatter to concentrate on the surrounding sounds. Will the vet arrive on time?
Signs of Life
The lion was showing some signs of moving which was certainly a good sign. The rangers were successful in blocking the paths with their jeeps so that even if the lion was mobile, it would not be able to move sop easily from the spot.
In this case, they wouldn't have to block the paths. They weren't able to sedate the animal again, because they had used a lot of their sedatives, the vet had a dose with her. But they finally were able to stall her. Help was perhaps close at hand.
The Rangers Had to Be Careful
Although they tried hard they were not able to block the lion fully. The animal was irritated by this and the rangers needed to be doubly careful so that the lion did not harm any of the rangers in any way.
The rangers began worrying. They felt inept at the prospect of helping the the animal, they could not help the animal as well as a vet or someone who knows all about treating animals and in this case the lion's problem was unique. They were again feeling helpless how could they help the lion?
A Collective Effort
The lion was of huge size, although the lion was not in a great condition, was still capable in killing the people who were blocking his way.
The rangers knew that they had to seek each other's help to help the lion, but they had to plan their way out, it was still not the easiest thing to do as there were too many people in the group and each one of them had different opinions about it. While one section of the rangers thought it wise to wait for the vet, the others thought that by the time the vet arrived it would be too late.
The Vet Finally Arrived
The lion was writhing in pain owing to its bulging stomach. Though he was in trouble, the giant lion could attack any one of them and even kill them. He was slowly beginning to get aggressive and it was evident that he was not liking the presence of the people around him.
He was laying still, but the rangers knew that something untoward could happen at any time. They knew that they had no other option but to have faith in each other. However, in the back of their minds, they knew what the lion was capable of and was on their feet. Fortunately, the vet arrived at the site.
The Fear Was Evident
The rangers had no intention to move their jeeps. They put them there so that they could keep the lion still in one place. They had no idea when the lion would leap at them. They had to be cautious and leave no stone unturned to stay safe. However, the lion instantly made the rangers its target that was sitting in their jeeps.
Several rangers already had close shaves. They knew that one false step would be lethal. The fear of the lion in their minds was slowly increasing and by the time the vet arrived, it reached an all-time high.
About to be Sedated
The rangers were pretty much alert as they knew anything could happen anytime. They didn’t want to be a victim of the lion’s aggressiveness or get hurt. The rangers wanted to stay out of the animal’s range and therefore, choose to dive their jeeps away.
The vet’s presence too wasn’t able to calm them down. The vet knew that she had to act as soon as possible as being late would have its consequences. The only chance she had was to sedate the animal at any cost. But that too had some associated risks. With that being said, sedation was the only option.
The Risk Was Looming Large
The vet knew that there was always a risk if she tried to sedate the lion. There was every chance that the lion wouldn’t wake up from it. More so, because of the condition that the lion was found to be in. The bulging stomach forced the animal to the verge of falling unconscious.
However, his aggression and continuous attempt to attack the rangers around him led the vet to believe that the injection wouldn’t have a fatal impact. The vet had the only option and that is to apply tranquilizers. Everyone was waiting with bated breath.
The Lion’s Attention Had to Be Averted
No matter how hard they tried, the rangers failed to divert the attention of the lion. Instead, the animal was keeping its eye on who was doing what around him. He was slowly becoming more and more intolerant of the rangers. The vet decided to sedate him, but she had to wait for the lion to look elsewhere.
Luckily, the animal turned his head in another direction and once it did, she slowly tiptoed up to the animal and slowly pushed the sedative into the lower body of the lion. Now, the only thing they could do was to wait for the lion to fall unconscious.
Gradually Falling Asleep
After being sedated, the vet had to wait for some time for the lion to fall unconscious. Just over two minutes had passed when the vet and the rangers noticed that the animal was slowing down more and more.
As the lion became less active, the vet didn’t lose the opportunity to push another couple of sedatives. The first injection was not enough to put the giant lion completely to sleep. Therefore, more sedatives had to be injected and once the vet did it, the animal finally was on the verge of dropping its guard.
Fallen Asleep
After the vet injected an extra couple of sedatives into the lion, it was time to wait for the lion to be completely out. The lion passed out after some time. The rangers let out a sigh of relief and dropped down to their knees.
They were exhausted, following the hours of struggle they had endured. Their heartbeat was racing faster. But now, it became normal. They were struggling to save their lives from the animal and were doing everything in their capacity to be safe. They had finally survived the onslaught.
Time to Check the Big Bulge
Now that the lion was completely out, the vet finally had time to pay attention to the big bulge in the lion’s stomach. That was what she came for and after the lion had gradually fallen asleep, it had become easier for her to check the bulge out.
She grabbed the surgery kit from the jeep that belonged to the ranger's headquarters and took out her tools. She got to work and opted for an ultrasound. She had to figure out what caused the bulge in the lion’s stomach.
The Reports
The vet finally carried out an ultrasound and once the reports were out, she was quite shocked. She decided to ring up the police immediately. She suspected strange activities. Surgery had to be done and the police were already on the spot so that it could be done promptly and without any hassle.
But before everything, the police decided to ask George a few questions. But why did they pick him out? The others were quite surprised by this sudden decision and couldn’t get to the crux of the matter.
Suspicion Confirmed
When the vet had a look at the ultrasound report of the lion’s stomach, she was shocked and suspected something. Her suspicion was confirmed when she finally found out that an object had blocked the entrance to the animal’s stomach. The lion had swallowed an object and it got stuck in its body.
Unfortunately, the animal’s digestive system couldn’t break it down. As a result, it caused the stomach to bulge. Now there was only one thing that the vet could do. What was that? Was it the last resort for her? Was something drastic going to happen?
Surgery
After noticing that an object that the animal had swallowed had blocked the entrance to his stomach, the vet had an only option left and that was to cut open the stomach and take the thing out. But that needed someone who was a thoroughly professional individual and could accomplish the task with utmost care and precision.
Luckily, the vet was capable enough. But surgery does have some associated risks, especially, if that has to be done right in the middle of the savanna. The vet was going to face a stiff challenge.
Cutting Him Open
The vet had to be extremely careful while performing surgery on the lion. She had to apply precision and care while cutting the lion open. She did it with perfection along with the bulge in the animal’s stomach.
After cutting through the skin, the muscle, as well as the esophagus, she finally reached the source of the bulge. When it was revealed to all who were present there, their surprise knew no bounds. They had expected something else and this was beyond it. What did the lion swallow? What exactly was in the lion’s stomach?
Was It Meat?
When the stomach was cut open and the vet dug deeper into the lion’s body, she found a piece of meat that the animal couldn’t digest properly. As a result, the area swelled up. When the vet checked the inside of the meat, something was revealed to her that knocked her out of her wits in the first instance.
This is why the police had decided to investigate George. Inside the meat, there was something that was glowing. All this was rather shocking and maybe the rangers and the vet didn’t see anything of that sort before.
A Microchip
After checking the inside of the piece of meat, the vet was shocked to no limit when she found something glowing. It was a small microchip that was stuck inside. Seeing this, the police decided to ask George some questions regarding it.
George somehow had an idea about what the chip was all about. He divulged some important facts about his encounters with some mysterious figures in the savanna. Once he disclosed it, everyone was left dumbstruck. Did that happen? If that is so, why didn’t George disclose it earlier?
Landing upon the ‘Tracking’ Device
The device indeed looks interesting. But a few days back, George had spotted some poachers with this device in hand and immediately confiscated it. He wasted no time and produced the device for the officers. One of the officers made no mistake in recognizing it since someone else was caught with the device too.
Now it is left to be seen what the officers do with another of the same device. Whether they would discard or use it for later purposes is best left to time. We assume it will come of good use, but the decision remains largely with the authorities.
Robust and Smart Device
This device when seen closely resembles intricate work, which can help track the microchip. This is the very way how poachers detect the presence of the lions, and the rangers have no idea of the same.
This mechanism that came recently is a rather sophisticated and advanced tactic. Often the lions are provided meats that they can’t digest easily. As a result, they get stuck, and tracking them becomes a rather easy job. Though the process seems easy, a lot of factors need to be assessed before poachers implement this technique.
Stitch-Work Done Quick
The recovery process of the lion seems largely affirmative. Thankfully, the chip has been removed and the lion is out of danger. As a result, the vet went back to stitching up the lion to hasten the process of recuperation.
While she was busy doing these tasks, she also ensured that health-wise, the lion was in a better state. If there were internal hemorrhages or any such cause to worry about, then she had to stop. Now that she looked healthy, the vet predicted she would be back to her normal health.
Welcome back to the Savannas
The beasts belong to the wild. And that’s the habitat that suits them well. So, when the lion woke up, it was a tad confused, puzzled, and dazed. But after regaining full consciousness, it started walking away much faster than it used to, before the surgery. That was a welcome relief for the doctors too.
The lion went back to its original habitat- the savanna. Perhaps, it would now find peace and the ambiance that would assist in quick recovery. However, the vet on the other hand was left with one work.
Happy and Contented Veterinarian
The immense satisfaction that the vet’s face wore was simply unparalleled to anything else in the world. She knew she did a good job and that got reflected in how the lion walked back into the savanna.
She understood that without the help of the rangers and their relentless effort, the lion and even the doctors wouldn’t have been safe today. Now that the work was done, she went back to the city to attend to more patients. But she was cautious- and did one last job, before setting sail for the city.
Animals’ Protection Implemented Strongly
George was assigned the supreme responsibility of feeding the vet with the minutest information about the movements of the lion. So, he would keep a close eye on her and report the same to the vet.
On the other hand, the police did their duty and ensured that the poachers were caught without fail. The entire organization was arrested. This sent a message that the protection of wild animals was pivotal to everything else. Safety of animals assumed predominance, and the lion stood tall befitting that of the king of the jungle.
Next: 60's Kids Unacceptable Things The Hair-Raising Things That The Kids Did in the 60's That Are Completely Unacceptable Now!
Pregnant Women Vices
While mothers from ages have been trying their best to take care of their children everywhere, there have been strange incidents where mothers haven't given up their vices even when they were pregnant.
Smoking is one such vice that decreases oxygen levels and affects babies in the womb. While today mothers are careful to avoid smoking. You may have noticed when you were younger that by taking a swig with a friend while she was pregnant with your younger sister or brother. Of course, they may have not known better. But today mothers may have been horrified to know how the mothers of yore used to behave around their kids.
No Car Safety Protocols
Little kids were known to be seated in the front seat without a seatbelt. The mom and dad used to make their arms work as a seatbelt. Infants even used to ride in unattached baby seats.
They even sat with Mom in the front seat or get a pride of place in someone's lap! Bigger babies or toddlers used to ride in shoddy car seats. It was only in the 70s and 89's that there were seat belts and good car seat regulations to protect the kids and the others riding in the car.
Smoking A Sign of Maturity
Cigarettes were a thing in the 60s and 70s and it was quite common to see a cigarette perched on the lips of most men and women whether it was around kids or not around them.
Being exposed to secondhand smoke was not considered such a big deal before and even cigarette ads had babies and parents together. Mom and dad even used to click cute photos with unlit cigarettes or pipes. Even teens used to smoke and it was even considered cool or a sign of maturity. Kids were also asked to fetch cigarettes from stores. Today, it would be considered unethical.
Unsafe Cribs
Another on the list of strange behavior in the '60s were pediatricians who encouraged mothers and babies to sleep on their stomachs which is not accepted at all. Cribs today had a lot more safety measures than you have today.
There were drop rails and kids could also risk getting stuck in the slats. There were other risks involved right from choking hazards and fingers getting caught in the crevices of cribs. Thankfully, things are a lot better now with better manufacturing interventions that incorporated more safety precautions for babies.
Trampolines Without Nets
While there cannot be anything more fun than jumping on the trampoline. Imagine a baby jumping on one without the safety of nets! It is pretty horrifying, right? The babies had every chance of falling on their heads and suffering from injuries such as sprains and even breaking a leg or two.
There were also instances of a kid jumping so hard that bounced off the trampoline. Unfortunately, in those times there was not much thought put into the whole scheme of affairs of how to take care of kids while they are jumping on a trampoline.
Magnified Choking Hazards
The concept of child-proofing has changed over the years. While earlier all Parents did was keep a child in his/her playpen and busied themselves with completing their chores. They were not worried that the child would crawl around and well do anything as their heart desires.
The mothers would even let the kids play with the pots and pans and not worried about the child coming in touch with the chemicals under the sink. Childproofing was not given much of a thought, whether it was childproof medicine or whether it was special latches for doors, cabinets, drawers, and more. Needless to say, there were other concerns such as choking hazards and scary incidents such as using a fork to stab electrical outlets.
Off To School Alone
Today children have it easy as all they have to do is jump into their waiting carpools right at the door and zoom off to school. However, in the 60s children as young as first-graders teamed up with their buddies to walk their way to their schools.
Yes, they were left to themselves and although it must be fun for them, the parents didn't bother to find out whether they were dawdling around or whether they went away with a suspicious stranger. Today, children cannot even think of loitering around without being admonished by their parents.
Going Unescorted to Friend's Houses
These days it is tough to find a child and let them go on a play date also parents do not let their kids go off to anyone's house without doing any thorough background check.
But in the '60s, you may just have to tell your mom you are going off somewhere and you were good to go, whether it was on a bike or just walking casually to their neighborly playdate. They did not have to see an appointment to meet up with them. It was easy to get to their friend's houses as they lived close by. Friends stayed for a meetup and even stayed back for dinner.
Too Much Sugar
Sugary gums and candies were a big hit in the '60s childhood staple. And blowing bubbles with their candies is another thing that they used to enjoy and breaking the bubble over their nose.
Kids used to enjoy the bubble-blowing contests and as soon as the one used to break another would start on a new piece. Although students were not allowed to chew gum, they would have the same anyway and while you would be able to make friends you would also have cavities. Today, kids are not allowed to have so much sugary stuff, sugar high is real and they are not allowed to overdo the sugar bit at all.
Sugary Bowl For Breakfast
There was a time when people loved to have Cereals for breakfast. There were a lot of cereals made up of corn, wheat, or oats. However, some cereals were laden with sugar, such as Trix and Cap'n Crunch.
Of course, today there are a lot healthier options to snack on such as unsweetened corn flakes, that may need a tinge of sugar. The sugar bowl prettying up your dinner table or whetting your appetite but too much sugar in the form of sugary cereals is a sure recipe for a belly ache.
Strange Disciplinarian Actions
Discipline and more discipline were the mainstays of most Catholic schools, if you happened to be the naughty kid who broke rules then you were subjected to disciplinary actions.
Well, the disciplinary actions whether it was a ruler used to smack your knuckles or admonish you loudly with the top of the voice did make the children rather scared of the stern teachers. Another punishment that was rather rampant than we would like to believe was ear pulling and dragging the child out of the class. Such punishments are rather rare today, whether it is a blessing in disguise or otherwise is something that you should decide.
Sneak in Candies
In the 60s it was rather easy to buy sweets that were not easy to get at home, simply because your mom did not allow you to have sugary sweets or have too much of them. But children at candy stores had a great time using all their treasure trove of pennies to buy candies, not only candies you could also buy stuff such as ice cream soda, egg cream, or just plain soda with lots and lots of sugar.
Even adults loosened their purse strings and allow them to have a little extra sugar than normal as they sat in a corner drinking their way. Students were allowed to have a little extra sugar as long as they ate their lunch or dinner without making a fuss. Today's health-conscious adults will surely think twice before feeding their children more sugar.
Helmetless Bike Rides
Kids those days were a lot more resilient, they fell and stood up again never worried too much about their bruises and cuts. Whether it was falling from their bicycle while riding it for the first time as their father taught them. As they learned their way to go on the bumpy ride and become a pro at biking, scraped knees or bruised elbows notwithstanding. Parents were a lot chilled out about the whole process and let their kids bike around and find their adventures.
However, the scenario has changed, today children are asked to ride with a lot more caution and never forget to wear their helmets. Now it is a law and children and their parents must abide by it.
Hitchhiking Considered Normal
The '60s were all about hitchhiking their way to reach their destinations. So, what if you do not have transport to reach your destination, you can always hitchhike your way to your destination.
But as time went on hitchhiking was looked upon. Whether it was young adults, hippies, or transients they walked long distances. kids would use their thumbs too to get free rides. Kids used it when they were late for school, or to run away from their homes. Sometimes it was to go to a place where the parent did not take you along. Today, hitchhiking is completely gone out of vogue.
Playing Unchaperoned
In the 60s mothers preferred it when their kids would go out in the morning to play so that mothers could concentrate on finishing the chores and meet and greet their friends.
The mothers only called in the kids when it was dark and the street lights were switched on. As Jerry Seinfeld said that they were like wild dogs and would remain outside for long stretches and their parents had simply no clue as to what the kids were doing for so long. It would make for an interesting chronicle to note all the things that the kids indulged in those fun times.
No Parents At The Beach
The teens had a gala time in the '60s at the beach. Yes, those beach movies were right, kids would play endlessly on the beach with their pails and get all tanned in the process. The whole family joined them at the ocean.
Kids are usually water babies and as their parents rested below the beach umbrellas, enjoying a daytime snooze as the warm sun lulled them into a deep sleep, the kids would quietly slip away and play under the sun and in the sand, and the parents would only tell them to stay in sight. They knew that the lifeguards would take care of the kids.
Suntanning Without Sun Protection
Those were the days in the '60s when the children were allowed to turn into brown acorns and not think of UV protection. The mothers may have thought of wearing some suntan lotion, but it was mainly to get a tan than protect the skin from the harmful UV rays.
Older kids would use the more ubiquitous baby oil with iodine as it would prevent burns and would use a reflector hack to allow the sun from baking them with their hot fingers of the sun, as we say those were the days when fear-mongering was certainly not a thing.
Playing Anywhere on The Streets
Big cities in the 60s were not beautified with parks and green spaces before, now they are dotted with pretty parks and verdant green spaces. So, while those expansive spaces were not there, kids made good use of whatever was available and by that, we mean the streets. Even, the high-trafficked streets in the 60s worked as a playground.
So, the manhole covers doubled as the place where kids use to throw their marbles and chalk on the asphalt and worked as hopscotch boards. The kids moved away when the big cars came zooming in. The kids came back as the cars drove away. Simple fun formed the crux of their lifestyle, but now fancy parks have made way for the asphalt streets.
Staying Hydrated Through Garden Hoses!
We don't think bottled waters were easily available in the '60s unless, of course, you went to a canteen. So, the hose, yours or a neighbor's, worked great as a replacement for bottled waters.
It was the simplest way to stay hydrated. Drinking from hoses was considered cool, nobody worried about great amounts of lead in the hose water. The brass nozzle was also dangerous. Drinking from public fountains was considered okay, however, things have changed dramatically as now drinking from water fountains is no longer considered safe. You may never see kids drinking water from the fountains in parks.
A Fire Hydrant Cool-Off
There was a time when officials had hydrants for kids to cool off in the summer and they knew the hack to put down the water pressure or they can also put on a sprinkler feature.
But older kids those days used to open the fire hydrants with tremendous force. The gush of water was so powerful that it had the power to knock the children down, so it was not safe at all. Smaller children could get hurt as a result of the force of the water. So, chilling with the fire hydrants is no longer an option.
Blood Sisters For Life
Kids loved the idea of brotherhood and loyalty and little to their knowledge used dangerous techniques to make small cuts on their fingers and mix the blood by pressing them together.
It was instead of the age-old practice of oaths (yes, bloody ones) and it solemnized their friendship forever. They did not understand it well and hence had no clue that they would be exchanging bacteria and infectious diseases. Kids today are a lot smarter and may find safer techniques to express friendship. Bloody friendships are something that belongs to the past.
Back Window Journeys
Although, most parents may think that the lack of cell phones or devices may be a blessing in disguise so kids would find different ways to entertain kids while going on road trips. It may be boring for some kids especially if they didn't have kids of similar age.
But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention, so if you weren't a bookworm or didn't like to shout at the top of your voice they would sell in the back window of the car. Because there was a nook where they could stretch their lithe bodies in. They could also stare from their back windows and enjoy the whole ride.
Latchkey Kids
The '60s saw another interesting thing, they introduced the phenomenon of latchkey kids. It was a term used for kids whose mothers joined the workforce and they let themselves in using the key.
Kids, would just enter the house and have a meal by themselves. If the kids had older brothers and sisters, they would take care of them, so parents did not have to bother much about the kids being at home unchaperoned. Helicoptering parents were perhaps not a thing then, now you have devices to check on your kid's antics while you are far away working away on your laptop in your office.
When Spanking Was a Thing
Parents in the 60s did not think twice before spanking the kids, whether it was a smart spank on their heads or just putting them on the knees to spank the protesting child. Sometimes either of the parents chased the kids around the house with a belt in their hands.
But kids nowadays are not disciplined in a similar way since beating them in any way acts as a form of abuse. It may impact the impressionable minds of kids so much that they may get scarred for life. Things have changed now and perhaps for the better. There are more constructive ways to discipline a child now.
The Stinging Antiseptic
There are various medicines resting on shelves such as dark pink, over-the-counter antiseptics that were rather scary as they stung, smelled, and even caused a stain.
It found its way into the medicine cabinet until of course it got a rap by the FDA who screened drugs such as these to find things that were full of mercury and could have caused too much harm, yes it could have affected the brain, kidneys and even unborn babies if the mothers were exposed to such stuff. Today, parents are a lot more careful and take a good look at the ingredient list before applying any medicine to their kid's bodies.
Dangerous Toys
Not all toys were harmful, such as Monopoly and Candy Land but there were many toys in the 60s that were considered right down dangerous. One such toy was the Swing Wing, which had a hula hoop that was attached to the helmet that you needed to swing around and it included head movements like the whiplash.
And there were Jarts, which has a dart complete with a dangerous hook attached that would move around the air and land on the kids in a risky way. There were other toys such as BB guns and cap guns, these caps would make sudden strange noises.
Chasing Pesticide Spraying Trucks
Pesticide sprays were considered a big delight for kids who found it a whole lot of fun chasing the truck as it let out white smoke to kill mosquitoes or other insects. The smoke had a lot of chemicals that were harmful to kids.
The fog looked so enticing and sometimes it smelled good too. Kids loved the idea of chasing and it was fun on the back of moving cars and just running along with them would seem such a fun exercise for them. Nowadays, those trucks would come and go and kids won't peek out of their windows at all.
